forty men and women shiver open at seven
prayer in passing
boots hike onto bare feet
down the trail to mess
               a mess
my feet shod silently
boots tell campfire stories
to feet dumbstruck by swirling
spectacle of Size 12 singing to Size 5 butt head with
Size 1 holding the hands of 7T
My feet remember all of them,
feet carried all of them,
but like each sure step in quicksand
or broken stumble on sure ground,
neither ground nor striking foot affix
the maelstrom of my spirit
boys listen with trust to a man listening to himself
and hearing
nothing
